Specialized Trips at the Monarch Center
The Monarch Center offers specialized trips for adults and parents as well as adolescents. Here, you can see what trips and expeditions we have planned over the course of the next year, all of which explore human potential and personal growth through wilderness and gestalt.

  1. Spring and Fall 2007 Esalen Trips:


    The Participants: Designed for those interested in – or those seeking careers in – the Wilderness (e.g. Outdoor Behavioral Health) and/or Gestalt fields, as well as those wanting to experience and learn more about Nature’s ability to heal, instruct and guide.

    The Facilitators: This workshop will be led by a group of facilitators who together have a combined experience practicing Wilderness and Gestalt therapies of over 100 years. Their styles, skill and love for what they do, make them a team of unmatched excellence.

    Expedition Details: The cost for this 10 day expedition, including all equipment (except personal clothing), over 50 hours of workshops, food and lodging is $4,200.00 per person. To register, please contact our Admissions Coordinator at 303.569.0767

    The Spring 2007 Esalen Schedule:

    • May 25, 2007: Meet at Esalen. Prior to the wilderness expedition portion of this workshop, the group and leaders will spend two days on the grounds of Esalen in Big Sur California, for orientation and intensives (experiential Gestalt group workings and instruction).
    • May 27, 2007: The wilderness expedition component of this workshop will commence. The 6-day backpacking trip will take place in the Ventana Wilderness area just adjacent to the Esalen grounds on the Calirfornia coast. Patricipants must be physically prepared to complete the expedition given pack weight and hiking requirements.
    • June 2, 2007: We will return to Esalen and spend the last two days of the workshop soaking in the springs over the Pacific, debriefing and relaxing.


    The Fall 2007 Esalen Schedule:

  3. Adolescent 60 Day Multi-Cultural Course:


    The Monarch Center will be offering a unique program for five teens experiencing troubles at home. In this course we will pair the youths with five teens from the Pine Ridge, Lakota Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. The five students will spend three weeks on the Pine Ridge Reservation learning about the Lakota Sioux culture, doing community service work, attending their school, etc. Next the group will spend time in Colorado at the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe, New Mexico backpacking and following a typical wilderness therapy experience. From there, the group will spend three weeks in a local village in Mexico doing a community service project. Lastly, they will return to Colorado for a final debriefing.

    The specifics are as follows:

    • Cost: $450 per day
    • Family Involvement: continuous throughout the 60 days in communication, family therapy, visits, etc.
    • Eligibility: 14 - 18 year olds, academic credit given, same admissions criteria necessary as the standard inpatient residential wilderness program
    • Trip Dates: Late August, 2007 - Early November, 2007 (exact dates not yet chosen)

  5. Adult 10 Day Costa Rica Trip:


    The Monarch Center also has another adult trip planned in Costa Rica. This will be a 10 day trip in late spring, 2007. The first 2 days will be spent at a resort, yet to be determined. Following the initial two day orientation and introduction, we will spend six days backpacking in the Costa Rican backcountry, ending with a two day debriefing back at the original resort. We will participate in a community service project with a local village while focusing on exploring human potential and personal growth through wilderness and gestalt therapy.
